There are a few things to look for when searching for the best omega-3 supplement in the UK. Firstly, unless you have specific dietary requirements and can’t eat fish, cod liver oil is the best omega-3 supplement, and is superior to other fish oils and flaxseed oils. There is still a lot to decide when picking a cod liver oil though. Some key points to look for are:

  • Cold processed oil – this is essential to protect the omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Triglycerides (not ethyl esters) – these are the natural form of omega-3 fatty acids, and so are the best form for the body.
  • Wild caught fish – Farmed fish, or fish caught in highly polluted waters are more likely to be high in toxins such as PCBs.
  • Natural vitamins – Many manufacturers have extremely harsh extraction methods, which strip out the naturally occurring vitamins in the oils. They then have to add synthetic vitamins back into the oils. These synthetic vitamins are not as beneficial to the body as naturally occurring ones.

Often manufacturers do not publish all this data. If you want it all, then the best thing to do is contact the manufacturer and ask for details. Any good producer of cod liver oil should be able to answer these questions with ease. If they struggle, it is obviously a bad sign.

It is up to you to decide which omega-3 supplement meets your needs, budgets and requirements – there are a number of brands to chose from. My personal recommendation would be Dropi cod liver oil, which is cold processed and from Iceland, or Fermented Cod Liver oil, which is cold extracted oil from America. Both are also made with wild caught fish, and have the fats in the triglyceride form. I’ve spoken extensively with both companies, and can vouch for their quality.
