There is a large range of probiotics available in the UK, and finding the right one for you is often difficult. The most important feature of a probiotic is to make sure that it has a diverse spectrum of bacteria. There are lots of probiotics which only have 1 or 2 species of bacteria, which, when you consider the 1000s of species already in your gut, usually don’t have a very significant impact. The bacteria in your digestive system fulfil a vast number of roles in keeping you healthy, have to compete with pathogenic and other competitive bacteria as well as the harsh and acidic conditions of the digestive system. Additionally, everyone has a different gut microflora, and different ailments – meaning one size does not fit all!
This means that best thing to look for in a probiotic is a variety of bacteria, ideally including species containing ‘Lactobacillius‘ and ‘Bifidobacterium‘, as these are very well researched and beneficial bacteria.
Finding the best probiotic in the UK is still very difficult though. We have conducted a ‘probiotic showdown‘ to compare various probiotics and the bacteria they contain, which you may find interesting. However, our personal favourite is the Primal Probiotics, which 6 different species of bacteria (including various species from Lactobacillius and Bifidobacterium), prebiotic fibre and is the only probiotic supplement to contain an extremely beneficial and well researched yeast called Saccharomyces boulardii.
The Primal Probiotics are designed to help populate the digestive system with bacteria that a modern diet can no longer provide, but our hunter gather ancestors would have enjoyed. It is well accepted in the nutritional community that our body is best adapt to the hunter gatherer lifestyle, and benefits the most from everything it provides – the exercise, food, and bacteria.
