Yes – you can take flaxseed oil and cod liver oil together, although many people would argue there is little benefit in doing so. Both flaxseed oil and cod liver oil are supplements which are taken to increase the amount of omega-3 in your diet. For most people, it is a case of deciding to take one or the other. Generally speaking, cod liver oils are thought to be a superior source of omega-3 fatty acids because they contain EPA and DHA, whereas flaxseed oil only contains ALA. However, flaxseed oil is a good vegetarian source of ALA, and can contain other healthy fats. We have a detailed overview of flaxseed oil and cod liver oil, if you are torn between the two.
The only risks with taking flaxseed oil with cod liver oil is if you are taking very large amounts of both, it may have a negative impact on your cardiovascular health. This isn’t so much as result of taking the two products together, but rather taking too much omega-3. The amount needed to cause problems is very large, and not easily achievable even if you are taking flaxseed oil with cod liver oil. As long as taken in sensible dosages, there is nothing wrong with taking them together, but as I’ve said, there is also little to gain.
